Appeal for Referees and/or Supervisors
from the PSFC Committee

As the largest fencing competition in the country, the Public Schools’ Fencing Championships rely on the help volunteered by adults and pupils (current and former) from the participating schools. The fact that in previous years the many events have been concluded in three days and in a reasonable time each day is a tribute to the industry and good will of teachers and coaches from a small number of schools.

It had for some time been a source of disappointment and frustration that the number of referees / supervisors working in the competition was disproportionately low compared to the number of participating schools. This greatly increased the difficulty of running this enormous competition.

The committee realises that not every school will necessarily have someone with the knowledge and ability to referee but we nevertheless also need adults able to supervise the various stages of the competitions, particularly where the fencers are being expected to referee themselves.

Last year there was again a significant improvement in the numbers of those who gave assistance and this was much appreciated. May we draw your attention to the fact that it is an entry requirement of the competition that each school provides at least one referee / supervisor to assist the organisers on each day that they have five or more entries.
